When to Pause Your Social Media Content

With the 45th Presidential Inauguration this Friday, January 20th, social media is buzzing all things Donald Trump. Chances are you have at least one personal social media account and have seen the various articles debating the turnout for Friday’s events. Social media has become an actual news feed in a sense, keeping everyone up to speed on happenings around the globe. While this factor has kept people logging into their accounts, and has certainly attracted new people to join various online communities, it can be a problem for businesses to be seen through the extra online noise.

While being top of mind and producing great content is what social media is all about, sometimes you just have to know when to hit the pause button. We’ve mentioned pausing content before in the wake of a tragedy, such as natural disasters, but sometimes we need to hit pause for other reasons. Pausing during a tragedy is allowing other accounts, such as local news, to get messages out to those in need. Pausing for a Presidential Inauguration is a different matter. It’s pausing because your posts will most likely be buried by political posts and you won’t be reaching your target audience.

But why not join in the political banter or profit from it?

As a business, it’s in your best interest to not post your own personal views surrounding a political event. Feel free to love or hate “The Donald” personally, but don’t let your affections or lack thereof interfere with the business you’ve worked so hard to build. Online conversations around political issues can mean a lot of negative comments on your page, which won’t look so great for business. Combating a sudden onslaught of negative comments and reviews for your business is not our idea of a good time and could destroy your online reputation. It’s our recommendation to stay quiet online for a few days surrounding the event and remain Switzerland!

Unless of course your business is in the business of politics, then by all means post away! It’s certainly a decision that each business owner will have to take into consideration all their own. Erring on the side of caution and protecting your online reputation is certainly the best option.

If you aren’t sure when you should be pausing content and need help with managing your online reputation, we’re here for you! You can reach us at 843.718.2988 or fill out our free online consultation form and one of our team members will be in touch!
