Do you know what your “writing style” is? Essentially, it encompasses your verbiage and your voice, and how your content is written. And this can really make or break your online marketing.

Many businesses don’t realize just how important writing style can be. They create Facebook statuses and tweets without a second thought. However, it’s critical to put some thought and strategy into your business’ writing style in your social media posts and all of your online content.

So what exactly is included in your writing style?

  • Your choice of vocabulary: Are you using shorter, more universally used language? Or are you focusing more on industry jargon that only people more involved in your niche could understand?
  • The reading level you’re writing at: As a general rule, it’s a good idea to keep online content around a 7th grade reading level. This increases the readability of your work and appeases the search engine algorithms. This does depend on your industry, as some require a much higher reading level.
  • Your voice: You may not realize it, but any writing style always has a particular voice, typically emulating the author of the content. It’s important to be conscious of this and determine what you want your business’s voice to sound like.
  • How formal you want to be: This again depends on your business and industry, but some writing styles may want to be more formal while others can be more relaxed, or buddy-buddy with their audience.
  • How lengthy your content is: Although social media content should always be short and sweet, blog content and email content lengths can range. How lengthy do you want your writing style to be?

How do you answer all of these questions? Think about your audience. What type of content do they want to read? What voice, formality, and reading level resonates with most with them? Your audience should be taken into consideration in nearly everything you do to market or promote your business.
