How Important is Email Marketing?

Email or electronic mail has been mainstream since the early 90’s. It was the new way for businesses to communicate internally and externally. While this function of email was huge for companies and personal use alike, it has since morphed into something even bigger. The late 90’s saw a rise in email marketing companies, and thus email marketing became an official marketing channel.

Other than social media and direct messaging, email is still considered an effective way to communicate online. In fact, you can’t sign up for social media platforms or messaging services without an active email address. Companies are collecting customer emails because this form of lead generation is so important to their business. The more eyes on the prize (i.e., their business or the product they’re selling), the more profitable their campaigns can become.

With the rise of social media, it has been argued that email marketing is on it’s last leg; however, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Since the rise of the smartphone, people now have access to their email on-the-go. That means business owners have access to their potential customers 24/7, 365 days a year. ExactTarget has found that 91% of consumers use email at least once a day. And according to techcrunch, 75% of Gmail’s 900 million users access their accounts on mobile devices.

The reason email marketing is such an effective channel is that you can directly market toward your consumer. If someone has already signed up to receive your emails, they are interested in your product. You have gained their trust, and with email, it’s simply time to tell them more.

Email marketing should be a part of your overall marketing campaign. If you have a sale running, it should then be told to your consumers by all effective means, meaning your social media pages, through email marketing, and added to your website. Email is such a crucial part of this puzzle because not everyone will be coming back to your website daily to check for sales or specials. A proper email marketing campaign that is setup correctly, will deliver the consumer to the exact page on your website that you want them to see.
